Olive Oil

Much mention has been made about olive oil in cooking.  Common quotes OliveBranchinclude, “Two Tablespoons a day seems to reduce chance of cancer in women” or “Extra virgin olive oil has less (no) hydrogenated fats.”  Still, did you know that it has some positive properties for your skin (the largest organ in your body) as well as being extremely cost-effective when replacing traditional body care products?

Why is olive oil good for your skin?

Olive oil consists of three basic oils.  The primary constituent is oleic acid also known as OMEGA 9.  This oil offers minimal skin benefits buts acts as a carrier to two essential fatty oils: Lineolic acid (OEMGA 6) and Linolic acid (Omega 3).  Essential fatty acids cannot be manufactured within the human body, and so must be gained through nutrition and application.

The oleic acid in olive oil has been indicated in acne flareups, so it is best used on the body, not on the face.  We will discuss facial oils and moisturizers in future posts.

How can you use it?

Olive oil moisturizes and locks in water.  This oil is 100% natural.  However, how you apply it depends on your preferences and your skin type.  Here are a few tips:

  1. Dry skin: When you get out of the shower, pat down, do not rub down.  This patting is particularly important during these winter months.  Patting will leave a bit more moisture on your skin, which will be locked in when you apply olive oil.  Pour about nickel – quarter sized amount of oil in the palm of your hand and spread evenly over your body. Repeat as necessary.  You can also do this after washing your hands as a hand oil.
  2. Moderate Skin: When you get out of the shower or bath, simply dab lightly where you wish to apply the olive oil, leaving slightly more water on your skin.  Pour a nickel size amount of oil in the palm of your hand and spread evenly over your body.  The extra water will help spread the olive oil thinly over your skin.  Repeat as necessary.

Where can you get it?

A gallon of pomace grade olive oil will run you about $12-13 in the Columbus, Ohio market.  Check your grocery stores first, but if you can’t find it there, Gordon Food Service keeps it on their shelves.

I recommend finding yourself a favorite flip top bottle and refilling it for convenience.  Store the gallon container in a cool dark place until needed.

Hint: the garage works well during winter months in Ohio when we most need the extra moisturizing effects of olive oil!
